In French, we aim to provide a broad understanding of what it entails to communicate ideas and thoughts in another language. We base our teaching on the children’s natural curiosity about other cultures, in order to deepen their understanding of the world. Conversational skills are a key aspect of teaching and learning – children are learning far more than lists of words. As their fluency and confidence grows, we introduce known stories and ways of writing in familiar settings using another language. We hope, in this way, to provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries in the future.
